Scale control without salt, wastewater or a drain.
A conditioner changes the hardness minerals so they are far less likely to stick to your pipes, your heater element and your shower glass — without removing them and without using any salt. There is no regeneration cycle and no wastewater, which makes it the low-maintenance option and a good fit where a drain line is difficult. Worth being straight about the difference: it controls scale rather than removing hardness, so if you want the classic slippery soft-water feel, the softener is the one.

City Water Dual Tank
Two tanks, staged — softening in one, carbon in the other.
The bigger city-water build. A dedicated softening tank and a dedicated carbon tank, plumbed in at the point of entry so every tap, shower and appliance in the house is downstream of both. Treating in stages does each job properly rather than asking one bed of media to do everything, and both tanks backflush themselves to keep the system working for longer.

Well Water Dual Tank
Built for a well, which is a different job entirely.
Out in The Acreage, Loxahatchee and the unincorporated parts of the county, plenty of properties are on their own well — and a well brings sediment, iron, sulfur odours and whatever else the ground it sits in has to give. This is a staged two-tank build with Katalox Light for the iron, designed specifically for private wells. Clearer water, no more rust staining in the laundry and on the fixtures, and the rotten-egg smell dealt with properly rather than masked.

Iron and hydrogen sulfide have to be oxidised before anything can filter them out — which is why a softener on its own will never fix a sulfur smell, no matter who tells you otherwise.
